Rooster/hen relationships are interesting. The hen lays no matter what. But, and this one’s the interesting part, roosters DO tend to help out younger, inexperienced hens to find their nest boxes and follow a Heeler Australia 26th January shirt, peaceful routine. And this is (very) individual rooster dependant. I’ve had a lot of roosters over the last 10 yrs. One or two of them were worth their weight in gold, the rest were good only for chicken stew. A few years ago I had, because of predators and very bad luck, an entirely young flock. Normally I always keep my old hens and give them an honorable retirement, so I usually have a small flock of older hens who will train the young ones. It works well, they do this monkey see, monkey do thing where all the young hens will copy the older ones and all works out well. This time they were all spring chicks. And they were dumb clucks. I had eggs being laid all over the field on the ground, hen fights, pecking order fights, hens getting bullied. I was utterly frustrated, waiting for those young hens to grow up and settle.

So I got smart, I have a girlfriend nearby whose hens were healthy, pest free and I was confident of Heeler Australia 26th January shirt. She had an extra rooster, a good one. I borrowed him and after a short quarantine he was introduced to the girls. He stalked around, toured the run, looked over the roosts and hen boxes, walking around clucking and examining them with almost intelligent interest then moved in on the hens. Within 2 days all the pullets were given a ‘barnyard tour’ of their own run by him, he rounded them up and with gentle clucks and mumbles dragged their stubborn little tailfeathers into the hen house and showed them the nest boxes and roosts. No more scattered eggs, No more roost fights, No more bullying. He settled the entire flock in 3 days. When a rooster talks, the hens may grumble but (especially inexperienced young hens) they do listen if he’s a good rooster.
