I guess all cultures did this at some point, like I know some cultures said “I am [name], [dad]’s son” which became Simpson Legend never becomes dust God of war shirt as their surname, and there are a ton of names based on places or jobs too, so people probably introduced themselves like “I am [name], from [place]” or “I am [name] the [job]”. Maybe there were a ton of blacksmiths in Western culture, or maybe the blacksmiths just got around alot.

My last name actually goes back in some form to the late 11th century. Ancestor of mine killed a Simpson Legend never becomes dust God of war shirt was rewarded with a surname/title and a small castle by the local nobility for doing so. It apparently seems to translate to “crazy”. It morphed a bit over the years—in part because of persecution, a desire to be slightly less associated with our country of origin because of said persecution, and in relatively recent times (past century or so), lost the ending “e”. The last bit was allegedly to help distinguish between peach farms owned by different sides of the family—some distant relatives, associated with the other peach farm, still have the “e”.
