I actually studied this when I went through Meiji history in university. My favourite part about the last name fiasco is Snoopy and friends Abbey Road Green Bay Packers shirt one fishing village that pretty much exclusively farmed eels was told to have everyone pick their last name. Everyone involved in farming eels picked the last name Unagi (eel) making the entire endeavour completely pointless. You actually had quite a few people simply pick their families profession as their last name as it was considered something to be proud of in the social construct of Tokugawa Japan (Which had lasted a long time and only ended >10 years before).

When you still had the rule of the samurai in Japan you had a pretty weird looking social structure that didn’t really conform to how things actually played out. Basically everyone was split into one of four castes, warriors (samurai), merchants, artisans, and peasants. Obviously you had the samurai up at the top of the social structure but Snoopy and friends Abbey Road Green Bay Packers shirt was actually peasants who were considered #2 (alongside artisans who were quasi-peasants). Merchants were considered to be bloodsuckers that leeched off of society as a whole due to not really contributing to the survival of everyone else. However, merchants were also the richest class in Tokugawa Japan (even richer than some samurai) because they were the ones that bought/sold everything between prefectures. A lot of the samurai back then were quite poor because they relied on a set salary that was given to their families over a hundred years beforehand that had not been adjusted for inflation. Imagine if you had to live off of the same $1 a day that your great-grandfather earned because he signed a contract stating that his family line will forever serve that company for the same wages.
