It’s just only the Stethoscope all I need today is a little bit of nursing and a whole lot of Jesus shirt important families had them while most people didn’t.Yes! I mean, that’s basically how it worked in Europe as well, they just did it 1000-1500 years earlier.Stethoscope all I need today is a little bit of nursing and a whole lot of Jesus shirt you live in in a village of 100 people and are likely never going to travel further than the next village over you don’t have a lot of use for surnames. If two people have the same name you can differentiate them easily enough “No not Tom John’s son, Robert’s son.” or “…not Bill the copper, Bill the Miller.”Most formalized surnames came around when the local king decided to do a census, which in most cases was around 1000CE-ish. AnNd the surnames were often just assigned by the census takers asking for clarification of who was who in the village. That’s why there’s a dozen+ different spellings for most Scottish surnames (like MacCloud/McCloud/MacLeod/McLeod/MacCleod/McCleod/MacCloud/McCloud/MacLoud/McLoud) cause the census takers were typically English, and they would just write down the description they were given (Mac Leod = son of Leod) the way they heard it, so it varied with every different accent they encountered.
