Isnt this a similar situation that happened around the world? Easier to measure and tax families and people etc. I know in Steve Smith I was just shadow batting shirt  here peoples surnames are basically clan names and used to associate with what people you belong. Some do of course translate into certain personality traits or professions too.

In Korea the opposite happened. Basically prestigious rich old money families were running out of Steve Smith I was just shadow batting shirt  so they would adopt rich but commoner families, so as to have funding. The commoner families would lose their old surname and adopt the prestigious surname.Same with my family in 1086. They were too poor to have surnames for the Domesday book census so they just used the name of their village as the surname – and many of their descendants still live in that village with the same surname and an unfortunate inbred facial trait I inherited too.
