In 2014 Spain released around 1,500 different surnames of sephardic jews who were exiled in 1492 during the inquisition. Tampa Bay Buccaneers because I hate the Packers shirt was under the condition that if you could prove your surname belonged to one on the list, then the spanish consulate would grant you citizenship of Spain. To my surprise my surname was actually on the list. Nobody in my family believes we have Jewish ancestry, and apart from a couple atheists, they are all Catholic. This is going to be wild.
Best Tampa Bay Buccaneers because I hate the Packers shirt
I really like how surnames and family names form. It usually does come from occupations/professions and Tampa Bay Buccaneers because I hate the Packers shirt and the name of family membersThe last name “Smith”, as I was told, comes from families of blacksmiths, and the fact they were usually the survivors in medieval wars as they were spared in occupations since they were the ones who made weapons made it into a common surname, which led people to adopt it more later on and made it so common-place todayIn Spain, after the Reconquista, Castilla started expanding and in order to unify and stabilize the area they started a castillanization of surnames that added the suffix -ez to the name of the patriarch of the families. So, for example, a family with someone called Rodrigo as the patriarch would become the Rodriguez family. This is interesting to me because it’s similar to how some arab surnames work, but with “Ibn + (name of the ancestor)” instead of the suffix. Here in Brazil, we just take the surnames of the parents and combine them in the child. This has led to long names for some people, but that was expected, seeing as Portugal has had some really long names historically
